From Instagram to Pixelfed

As part of my #BigTexit25 New Year’s resolution, I have now taken the first concrete step: I have moved my photo feed from Instagram to Pixelfed. After several weeks of testing, I have now officially established my new digital photo home at pixelfed.dk/sindum, where I will share my visual moments going forward.

Why Pixelfed?

The switch from Instagram to Pixelfed is more than just a platform change. It represents a conscious choice to take control of my data. Pixelfed is part of the Fediverse – the open, decentralized network of connected services that respect users’ privacy and control.

Unlike Instagram:
– Pixelfed does not use algorithms designed to keep your attention
– There are no hidden advertising purposes behind the service
– Your photos are not analyzed to build a consumer profile
– You are not the product – you are the user

Transition Period

On my Instagram profile, I have left a message about my switch so that friends and followers can find me on my new platform. I have chosen a gradual transition rather than an abrupt end to give my network time to follow along if they wish. The Instagram account will be completely closed once the transition period is over.

Challenges and Discoveries

The switch has not been without challenges. Pixelfed’s user interface is simpler and reminiscent of the original Instagram before it was filled with ads, reels, and algorithm-based feeds. It has been refreshing but also an adjustment period.

I have discovered a smaller but more engaged community. Interactions are based on genuine interest rather than algorithm manipulation. It feels like returning to the internet’s original purpose: to connect people.

Next Steps in #BigTexit25

This is just the first step in my plan to reduce my dependence on Big Tech throughout 2025. The next areas I am looking at include:
– Email services
– Search engines
– Cloud storage

I am documenting the entire journey here on the blog, both the successful steps and the challenges. It’s not about technophobia but about regaining digital autonomy and supporting services where users are customers and not products.

Have you taken similar steps? Are you curious about how it works? Feel free to share your experiences or questions in the comment section.
